I normally stay away from mysteries where the crime involves a child, and this one reminds me why - it's far too easy for the author to slip into cliche and melodrama, trading on cheap sentimentality to make up for a lack of depth in the storytelling. Yes, child crimes are tragic, but that alone is not enough to make for a story that stands out from the thousands like it on the shelves already.
