A Kindle freebie!

For a freebie, this isn't bad. It might be the best freebie I've read. But that doesn't mean it's good.

Things that annoy me:
* This is a definite case of HEROINE TOO STUPID TO LIVE. Said heroine, Cameron, is surrounded by other equally stupid and oddly laconic characters, including grandmother (who tells Cam nothing, but reads all Cam's thoughts) and Lewis (who busts into town, stays mysterious, then suddenly and almost reluctantly divulges a whole lot, then tells Cam he's leavin A Kindle freebie!

For a freebie, this isn't bad. It might be the best freebie I've read. But that doesn't mean it's good.

Things that annoy me:
* This is a definite case of HEROINE TOO STUPID TO LIVE. Said heroine, Cameron, is surrounded by other equally stupid and oddly laconic characters, including grandmother (who tells Cam nothing, but reads all Cam's thoughts) and Lewis (who busts into town, stays mysterious, then suddenly and almost reluctantly divulges a whole lot, then tells Cam he's leaving at 8 am the next morning, thus giving her only a few hours to absorb everything and then make a life-altering decision). They both come across like assholes.
* Too many descrptive words! They're not just eyeglasses, they're wire-rim glasses! she didn't just get a drink, she got a cherry coke and held the cold aluminum in her hand! urghhh
* repetition. "at times I felt beaten down, exposed, exhausted.... imprisoned." Just pick one!
* The narrator telling us what we just witnessed. After rattling off a series of thoughts, we are reminded that they are "morose" thoughts ... I just read them, thanks, I don't need you to describe them with extra adjectives now!
* Forced mystery. Grandma says "remember Michigan".... Narrator thinks: "Michigan ... as if I could ever forget the incident," but doesn't tell us, despite having just over-described every other thing.... And in the rare instances when someone is actually trying to impart useful information, Cameron cuts them off! "Enough. I get it." Well I, the reader, don't "get it" yet and would like that character to keep talking. Refer back to TSTL heroine, above.
* And, last but not least, the plot is INSANELY similar to Evermore, published the year before. This feels like Evermore fanfic, but the timing doesn't seem right for that, so I'm left wondering if perhaps the authors were in a writing workshop together and bounced one too many ideas off of each other. (I didn't exactly love Evermore, and I'm not exactly sure if this story is worse, or better.)

All that complaining aside, I find myself strangely compelled to read the sequel. It's not a freebie, and I don't know if I want to spend $2.99 to be insanely annoyed all over again. But I want to know what happens next. I like the twist where we know what happened, but Cameron does not. I find Maddox to be very appealing. Part of my problem with this book is that I did not like Lewis, therefore I didn't not like the ridiculous "romance" ... although I'm realizing now that perhaps we were not meant to like Lewis, and perhaps the romance was meant to seem fake. Still, I doubt we were supposed to want the heroine to be murdered on the basis of her utter stupidity. And I was most definitely there. The only really interesting characters were the child, Caroline, and the "bad guy who's not that bad," Maddox. ...more

I don't know if these series of books are only available in kindle form, but they are worth checking out (and they are very inexpensive to buy right now!) My SIL highly recommended this to me and I see why. The girl in this book can read minds. She tries to keep this information to herself (and her grandmother who also has the gift) until a murder happens in her town and she can read the murderers thoughts. A new character comes into play and teaches her about things she never knew before. I wil ...more

Până să citesc această carte, nu mai auzisem de Lori Brighton și nu știam nimic nici despre această serie numită The Mind Readers. Am citit romanul în limba engleză și consider că nu a fost foarte dificil. Am ajuns să citesc această carte după ce am găsit-o gratis pe Amazon și cred că am ales-o mai mult din cauza titlului care m-a intrigat puțin. (...)
