2.5 stars. Many of my friends here loved this book, but it just did not work for me. I think mainly for two reasons: The audio performance was terrible. Here we have a book that is honey sweet much of the time. Add to that a narrator who poured more syrup on.....in a sickeningly sweet fashion....throughout, and what you have is a recipe for a very sick stomach. And you know what happens when that occurs! This book is clearly about redemption and forgiveness, and the execution of these is told in an extraordinary way. Lush, exquisite prose completely takes one into the mind and world of Bonaventure Arrow. And what a world it is! I always love a back drop of the South, especially Louisiana. The culture and environment are well depicted. I just can't say enough about this book - it was brilliant! ...more

Most of the novel was very interesting and enjoyable to read. The characters are Christians who attend church services regularly; however, the story centered on the life of the characters and not their religion. The last few chapters, the author changes focus and gets very preachy about Christianity.
