I stayed up past my bedtime to finish this last night. Always the sign of a good book!

I started with the second book in this crime series and was so intrigued by the main character's backstory that I had to wait on holdlist for the first book. I'm really glad I did. Usually I stay away from any type of graphic violence, but this author and these characters, for me, make it worthwhile. This is one of my favorite authors and this is, in my opinion her best book yet. She creates such interesting complex characters and puts them in situations that cause them to struggle and grow. This one takes place in London and many scenes will be familiar to those who know the city. It might appear that the story is over midway through the book, but, believe me, she has just found her stride. At first I thought there was something special about this, maybe about the characters, or at least the protagonist. Then, midway, I found it hard to believe and hard to follow. At the end, it was nicely tidied-up and all the stuff that made me feel stupid was clarified, but this was really just entertaining enough to finish. You know...

WOW! I read a lot of mystery and thriller books, and this one really comes out on top. So glad I picked up some SJ Bolton - now I'm raring to read the rest. This one kept me fascinated and guessing nonstop - and still managed to surprise me. I read it in less than 24 hours, neglecting work and showering, and it was so worth it. ...more

Creative and interesting in the way Bolton subverts some of the standard conventions of mystery plotting, with strong characters as well.
