Darker and more complex than Lippman's Tess Monaghan mysteries, which I enjoyed about it -- I could really see Lippman stretching her mystery muscles in this one. What an odd book. It was both compelling and a disappointment. I liked some of the characters but was frustrated with them. Why are the police referred to as 'a police' all the time? I have never seen that in a book before or heard it on a TV show and I have even watched some episodes of Blue Bloods. Is it a Baltimore thing? Is it the new PC thing? But even the older cops do it. Would a fireman be called 'a fire'?
