So I have finally found something I enjoy more than reading David Sedaris: listening to David Sedaris. He is such a wonderful reader! I know he's reading himself, so it's really just like a speech (gossip monologue?), but one that has been careful edited and delivered with poised self-deprecation and a straight face.

Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls features a lot of dad criticism, some Chinese food anxiety, French political opinions, and quirks of visa acquisition – all things I can relate to!

I like listening to David Sedaris books and this did not disappoint. Whenever I have tried to read one of his books, I have found it to be dull and really not that funny, but there is something about his delivery that really draws me in.

Most of his essays are autobiographical, and I appreciate his take on life. I find him to be a really honest and clever observer of himself and people around him. Many essays in the book had me laughing out loud, but I found just as many to be very poignant and

Sedaris, like his compatriot Sarah Vowell, should always be consumed in audio format - so much of his humor resides in his vocal inflections and timing, and it's a shame to miss that on the printed page. As he himself admits, most of the stories here are very narrow in focus and often self-involved, but he never ceases to make me giggle as he perfectly articulates the awkwardness and aggravation of what Internet commentators derisively call "first world problems." I don't know why but I just didn't get into this. I think some of the subject matter was just not interesting to me (don't want to hear about your weird affinity for taxidermy), and some of the more interesting childhood depictions just made me feel I'd heard this story before. ...more
