What an amazing book! I knew that the Grimke sisters were active abolitionists, but this story makes them come alive in gripping, page-turning ways. By incorporating a huge amount of factual material along with a fictional story, the author gives the reader an intimate look at what made these two daughters of a Southern slave-hoding plantation owner so rapid about their anti-slavery views. absolutely lovely book. I am so sad that I had never heard of the Grimke sisters before this. What a tragedy that they are not well known but kudos to Sue Monk Kidd for giving them renewed recognition. We probably should really thank Judy Chicago for including their names in her painting "The Dinner Party". How nice it is that Sue Monk Kidd went to view this painting and took the time to read all 999 names included in the panels and that the Grimke sisters settled in her heart.

While I loved The Secret Life of Bees, I was disappointed in The Mermaid Chair. SMK is back in my good graces with this amazing story! I was impressed with the amount of research she did. I enjoyed the Amesbury/John Greenleaf Whittier connection in the story. I was surprised to find out that SMK's inspiration was a quote from Professor Julius Lester. He was one of my favorite professors at UMass!!
