I had no idea what this book was about when I started reading, I just knew it was historical fiction (my favorite) and it was popular at the library. I had to put my name on the waitlist and I was so glad I did.
I enjoyed the alternating chapters and overlapping stories of Sarah Grimke (who I later discovered was a real person) and Handful, her slave. I have obviously read about slavery before, however, I think having the overlapping viewpoints of a black slave and a white person who hated slave ...more

I really enjoyed this book and now I have to go and find out more about the Grimke sisters because I don't recall ever hearing anything about them before.
