Despite the hype and the Fox News driven Muslim author hysteria, the book turned out to be a rather bland retelling of early Christian history. Anyone who has studied early Christianity at all will be familiar with most of what is in this book. Jesus as a radical thinker for his time is nothing new and like the history book this is, very little is actually about Jesus, since the historical record is so scant. La versione originale inglese di questo libro lo definisce “zealot”, quella italiana lo chiama “ribelle”. Il dizionario inglese, a dire il vero, offre una lunga sfilza di sinonimi del tipo “fanatico, entusiasta, estremista, radicale, attivista, militante, bigotto, dommatico, settario, partigiano, infido, maniaco”. Non mi pare che facciano giustizia a quella importante “figura storica” che si chiama Gesù. Una “giustizia” di tipo, ovviamente, terreno e poco religiosa.

Just not as compelling as I expected. The first half or more felt like a basic history lesson similar to things I learned in a college Bible-as-literature class. It did get more interesting toward the end as he showed the cultural and historical reasons why Jesus came to be separated from the Jewish beliefs he held while alive, but even then it wasn't ground-breaking. The facts are thin so a lot of it feels forced...it makes sense but there's nothing really new here. ...more
