I found this to be very drawn out which was made worse by my guessing whodunnit very early on so I grew impatient.

I picked this up not expecting too much, so I was quite surprised. 1920s British mysteries with feisty young female heroines seems to be quite a popular genre lately and I've enjoyed a few. Brody, however, manages to stand out from the crowd with more sophisticated narrative technique (sections viewed through various characters' viewpoints), keeping the "period details" to a minimum and constructing a plausible and interesting mystery. This is an excellent mystery set in England and very reminiscent of the Maisie Dobbs novels, a sort of a cross between an Agatha Christie and a Maisie Dobbs novel. Kate Shackleton is the main character who is a sort of semi-professional investigator, specializing in finding out the fate of those men who went missing in World War I and were not returned home.
