Gaining Ground is a memoir written by Forrest Pritchard, recounting his efforts to save his family farm in the Shenandoah Valley. It was decently written, and a quick read. I'm not sure I really learned anything new or was particularly inspired by the book, maybe because I have read many similar books. It was fairly run of the mill as far as farming memoirs go, and at times read a little too much like an adventure novel for my tastes. Contains some anecdotes about techniques and hardships in farming that I was totally ignorant of because I'm not a farmer. I appreciate the lifestyle more, and have a lot of respect for those who take it on. I'll just be over here, eating the fruits of their labor. Unfortunately, it was painfully written. Full of unnecessary cliched phrases, often awkward and slow... kind of like an old dairy cow. But that's okay, my horizons still came out widened. ...more
