I first read this book when I was young, and it has had a lasting effect on my life. Reading both this book and To Kill A Mockingbird informed the kind of person I wanted to be growing up in the South in the sixties and seventies. I reread the book now after reading a post from Pat Conroy, who is one of my favorite authors, that he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I wanted to hate this book. I couldn't figure that out why one is the tutors lent it to me. And then I couldn't put it down...

This was a great read. I learned about a whole new place within the nation and a whole new culture. I had to read this for my Human Development course and I am glad I read it. This book reminds us how important education is.

4.5/B+ abridged audio -- Pat Conroy's life teaching school to African-American children on an island off the coast of South Carolina in the late 60's.
