I loved this book. Another one that I listened to (love that audible account), but I think it would be even more enjoyable in print. The main character, Almah, is interesting, and unique, and flawed in ways that are both frustrating and invoke compassion. The thing that kept it from a 5 is that it is set in the 1700s and 1800s, and uses language of the time -- which means having to deal with hearing quim, queer, and sodomite. As a EPL and Committed fan, I was unsure about Gilbert's fiction instead of memoir. However, I think the protagonist, Alma, was in many ways like Liz: courageous, curious, and worldly. Although Alma chose an unique line of work/study for the time, it was this quote from her thesis that brought her studies of moss to real life, "The greater the crisis, it seems, the swifter the evolution." How true Alma (Liz)! Whether it's leaving NY to go to Italy, India, and Bali to find yourself and love again

As impressive as the research is that was done for this book, I am having a really hard time getting into it. I'm going to shelve it for now and give my copy back to the library for now.
