What Members Thought

The Reason I Jump was written by a young, Japanese man with autism who seeks to answer questions people have about the thoughts and feelings of those on the autistic spectrum who often can't convey the answers themselves. The book takes the form of a single question (such as "Why do you echo questions back at the asker?") and his explanation and examples. There are also a few of Higashida's creative writing pieces included.

Much has been written about autism, but with the exception of Temple Grandin, little has been heard from those afflicted with the condition. Since this was written by a young Japanese teenager it is even more informative, though not so erudite. More of a plea to the public to be more accepting of those who are autistic and a few tips on how to behave toward those with autism.

The value of this book is the insight into the autistic mind. I hope it is accurate, but I have my doubts a little bit. In my limited contact with those with autism, some parts rang true and others seemed to be contrived. The important thing from here is to take the compassionate view point contained in this work and have it translate into greater medical and psychological understanding of the illness.
