This is a remarkable piece of historical fiction. The narrator, Henry/ Henrietta, is a light skinned slave boy masquerading as a girl. Henry gets caught up with the abolitionist John Brown, and bares witness to a great many historical events in the Pre Civil War era. He even has a run in with Fredrick Douglas and Harriet Tubman. McBride is a masterful lyricist and a storyteller of the first order. It's no wonder the book received the Natl Book Award. ...more
