Brutally honest account of a reign of terror in central Florida.
Well-researched and very accessible to read - talks not just to big players but also to the lesser known heroes. Focus on the Groveland incident but also seamlessly informs on the broader events in Florida and the United States.

A MUST read for all interested in American history.

Oh man this took me a long time to read. To be fair a lot has happened since I started.

Don't you hate nonfiction ebooks that surprise end at 67% because you didn't realize there were a ton of notes?

This is one of the best nonfiction books I've ever read, and probably the most important book I'll read this year. It has been YEARS since I studied the Civil Rights Era, so I welcomed the renewed - and yes, uncomfortable and heartbreaking - perspective of the Jim Crow south. I am particularly fascinated by all the people involved in this case: I harbor admiration for Marshall, marvel for Irvin, utter disgust for McCall, and confusion for Jesse Hunter, that enigmatic prosecutor. This is a readable book about one of the most egregious miscarriages of justice for African Americans in the years after World War II. It contains some incredible deplorable characters and some events I didn’t think would be possible, for its awfulness, in the 20th century. This sets up the stage for the structural racism we see now in the 21 Century and shows how African Americans as lynchings became too blatant, the justice system easily started to lynch them legally with little to know eviden ...more
