I had a great time with this. The movie is one of my favorites -- I saw it for the first time in college, and it's been a frequent watch for me ever since. Happily, the book maintains so much of the magical wonder that is part of the movie. It's not quite as excellent -- as other reviewers have noted, the narrator's asides about his own life are sometimes a bit long and tedious -- but the commentary is mostly hilarious, and the story is as wonderful as ever. I loved the movie, and always wondered about the book. I also thought that Rob Reiner must've added the framing device of the grandfather reading to his grandson--but surprise! It actually is part of the book (altho Reiner changed it some). Goldman's framing device in the book is hilarious, and the adventures of Westley, Buttercup, Inigo and Fezzik are as funny and wonderful to read as to watch. I'd love to visit Florin some day :)

I love the film version of The Princess Bride but had lower expectations of the book - I couldn't quite see how the self-effacing mockery of the fantasy/fairy-tale genre could be translated successfully into the written word.
