When I was in college I had a professor talk about the literature that occupied a space on his shelf that he considered, semi-sacred, essentially his literary scriptures that imbued life with meaning and taught one how to live. This book is the kind of book that belongs on that shelf.

This book is so good! I think this is the fourth time I've read it, and it never fails to deliver. So many well developed, lovable characters and so much heart and soul. I just wish the book didn't start so slow so more people would read it. 5+ stars all over again.

I enjoyed the book and the view points of the brothers made me laugh a lot at times. I didn't like that the book went on and on and on. I could have done without all the side stories, it just made me want to skim and get back to the point in a lot of sections.

There's something really amazing about this book. I'm not particularly interested in baseball, Seventh Day Adventists, the Vietnam War, Indian poets, fly fishing, or any of the other topics of this book, and yet, I love it. Duncan weaves all of this together into such a moving, sensitive portrait of a family that you laugh, cry, and celebrate just like you do with your own loved ones. So poignant and brilliantly written - a knockout.

Absolutely loved this book. Picked it up because I loved The River Why by the same author. Both are highly recommended.
Portrays and era of US history wonderfully. Loved this book.
