I really liked this book. In my opinion, it is as good as this author's first book, The Thirteenth Tale, although some of my friends disagree and think the first one was better. What I liked about this one, though, was its sense of place and time. The character of Bellman was very well-developed and intriguing, and his relationship to the other characters was at times sad but unfortunately very realistic for a grieving man in his time and place. Diane Setterfield is a wonderful story teller. However, I hated the premise of this story. A ten year old child makes a mistake and then (view spoiler) Just seems way too harsh. The thing is, though, I couldn't stop reading this. I guess I was waiting for a redemption that never really came. Though I hated the premise, the writing is very good. ...more
