Yeesh, this book was painful. McClanahan waxes nostalgic for the West Virginia of his youth and parades his (slightly embellished and made-up but still) neurotic family and friends through a stream of manicly leapfrogging retellings. I kept waiting for it be to be over and feeling bad about everything. Yes, the book serves to preserve his (altered) memories of his family. And, yes, the book shows an area of the States that has essentially failed its people. Unfortunately, I can relate to too man
