I listened to the Audible version read by Will Patton which was superb. You can tell Dickey was a poet, his language is just exquisite. While listening to this I wished I had not seen the movie so I could experience it just through his words though, from what I recall, the movie was very faithful to the book and Burt Reynolds was perfect casting! Incredible writing.
The ride through the wilds of the human heart prompts thoughts of a modern Heart of Darkness/The Secret Sharer as the inner dark of humanity lurks around suburbia. The questions it raises and the veneer it rips off modern life make the story compelling.

I can recall James Dickey coming to speak in a college American literature course. My recollections of the novel have been overshadowed with time by the movie.
