"A Free Life" took awhile for me to warm to the story but by the end, I knew I would read more by this author - Ha Jin. Nan Wu, the protagonist, immigrates to the US to study but realizes after the Tiananmen Square massacre that he can never return "home" to China. Through his experiences as an immigrant, he learns that a homeland is where you build your home and your country is where you raise your children.
