I don't know how the Australian YA authors do it, but they manage to capture the bittersweet nature of adolescence so well.
This reminded me of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist - I watched the film, or at least part of it, and was underwhelmed, but did like the concept of a young couple wandering through the night, discovering themselves and each other.
