Looking for Alibrandi takes me to a part of Australia I didn’t know existed and includes characters I never suspected were part of Australian life. Josephine Alibrandi has never known her father, and the lack of a father is a major problem in her Italian family. Just being from an Italian heritage sets Josephine up for scorn from her solidly Australian friends, and not having a father sets Josephine up for scorn from both her Australian friends and her Italian family.

If you've ever been exasperated with your grandparents, ever had someone look at you askance because of your race, ever been torn between two different worlds, ever thought you had been shortchanged by adults, ever wished you were loud and obnoxious yet funny and lovable, you'd like this book.

There are some problems with pacing, and I have some problems with the dramatic revelations, which makes this my first non-five-star Marchetta book, but it is still hilarious and warm (like Nonna's homemade

Good book about coming of age in Australia.

Melina Marchetta never disappoints me. This is one of her earliest works and I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the rest of her books. Very full-packed, with complicated (but non pretentious) storyline, likable characters and smart dialogues, Marchetta touched some of the most difficult issues for teenagers: race, single parent, religion, even suicide. The only thing I can complain about is the translation. It's not bad, but it can't reflect Marchetta's true essence. ...more
