This book came along when I needed a break from books on the Holocaust and African genocide.
Aunty Lee has recently lost her husband, and all of her friends and family encouraged her to continue doing what she did best, heal people with food from her Singaporean Cafe. She also had an uncanny knack for solving mysteries.

From such an accomplished writer, I expected more. I would give a later book in this series a try to see if her genre style has matured. Didn't really find the mystery or supporting characters compelling. I did enjoy the Singaporean angle! And I'd be up for spending more reading time with Aunty Lee herself.

I'm usually more critical of head-hopping POVs, but Yu makes it work. Memorable characters that never tip into being quirky as their only defining characteristic, a vivid setting and a mystery that unfolded pleasantly. I've already placed a hold on the second book from the library.

A Singaporean cozy! While I liked the view into Singaporean culture and food, I won't be continuing with this series. This book had too many irrelevant side stories and character portraits plus the bigotry of most major characters were not set straight enough to my liking.
