This is so good, full of household ghosts and sweet, sad humor.

Ruby Lennox narrates her life from conception in 1951 York, England, interspersed with "footnotes" of her ancestors' stories told out of order. Sometimes you get someone's fate in one paragraph, sometimes it's spread out over many chapters. You might find out early on how someone dies only to meet them again later only earlier in their lives. Some are summarized, dismissed, then maybe revisited. It's not always easy to remember what

I started this book in the spring, on a trip to York, sitting in the window of our apartment which looked out onto a row of small cottages. But when we got home, I put down the book and forgot about it until the end of the year when I was determined to clear my 'Currently reading' list.

I liked the way that the book is written in fragmented glimpses of the past, but I also found myself getting very confused about all the characters and their relationships. I needed a family tree!
