This is so good, full of household ghosts and sweet, sad humor.
Ruby Lennox narrates her life from conception in 1951 York, England, interspersed with "footnotes" of her ancestors' stories told out of order. Sometimes you get someone's fate in one paragraph, sometimes it's spread out over many chapters. I really wanted to love this book... it came so highly recommended. I think I might have liked it if there were less story lines and characters. I couldn't keep up and had to keep flipping back and forth. I particularly liked Ruby's story and would have probably enjoyed it on it's own.

I love Ruby Lennox - she's utterly charming in spite of a family that would put even Loveline callers to shame. Atkinson handles the mysteries and secrets of the characters beautifully.
