Jojo Moyes is one of my favorite authors. I look forward to every new book that she puts out. I wasn't sure how The Girl You Left Behind would be since it was different than the previous books I've read by her but I was pleasantly surprised. I loved this book. I loved the WWI setting as we saw Sophie Lefevre do what she could do to keep her family safe. On the flip side, was the contemporary story as modern battle is fought in court over ownership of a portrait of Sophie. The battle brought up m ...more

Finally a book about WWI. Having loved Me Before You so much, I wanted to read another book by this author, but was a little afraid to find that the next story would not be as good. No fears. While this one is decidedly different in subject and approach, it was an engrossing read. Somewhat evocative of Sarah's Key, but not quite. Not as good as Me before You, the first book I read by this author. I also have read way too many book about Nazi atrocities, so those parts were tedious. But the story of the painting was so interesting, where it traveled in its 100 year history. I had just seen the Monuments men, so I knew about the theft of all the great art during the war. This was a more personal story about the many owners of the painting. Good airplane or beach read and a fine ending.

This was my first JoJo Moyes book. I am not a big chick-lit or romance novel reader, but this one was quite enjoyable! While there are some things that are contrived and happily ever after in this book, I also thought it had some interesting characters and plot development. It was a bit slow and I read it while reading other books over the course of about a month, but I found by the end, I just HAD to know what was going to happen!
