This exquisitely written “locked room” mystery had me with my thinking cap on from page one as we know who was going to be murdered and by whom and we think we know why, but the detectives investigation this murder do not have this information – and believe the root to the solution is figuring out the how to this perfect crime. I went in expecting a page-turning crime thriller but ended up with an awkward and plodding mystery that isn’t really a mystery at all because we know whodunit from the start. The body of the book is just an extended conversation of deduction. Unlike the author’s previous novel, The Devotion of Suspect X, there’s little in the way of actual suspense or narrative build. One of the very best detective novels. Absolutely beautiful writing.
Coffee plays big part. Not a spoiler.
This is a puzzle type mystery where the reader knows who did it almost from the beginning. The question is how. Though the astute reader will probably figure it outit does present a good view of the Japanese way of doing things.
