Donna Tartt takes us deep into the life of a boy who suddenly, tragically, loses his mother in an art museum bombing. It's a decisive moment in Theo's life. He is almost alone in the world, with no one who cares for him to assist him. Theo falls and falls and falls, and those who gradually appear in his life---his father, friends---are little help to him.

This was a five star book for me until Theo was in Amsterdam toward the end of the book. It seemed to become very disjointed at that point. Too many things did not "fit". I really liked her writing. And fantastic characters and dialogue but OMG I thought it would never end.

Things I could do without:

The Goldfinch is a unique and original book--an interesting and rich story. Many of the characters in the book are very well developed. The characters Hobie and Boris were especially well developed. I can understand how and why this won the Pulitzer Prize. The book generated a great deal of interesting conversation during my book club, and one of the things that intrigued me the most, was that several people truly hated the book.

Love this book! The book tells the story of a 13 year old boy whose mom dies in an explosion in a museum in NYC. The boy survives and steals a painting from this museum. The plot centers around this boy and the painting. Written as a classic but at the same time in touch with today's world (Las Vegas, drug use, gangs). ...more
