In the author's first book, a Lebanese man fleeing the civil war makes it to Paris, where he is counseled to continue to Montreal and seek asylum. The narrator of this book is quite possibly that same guy, now in Montreal, and seething with self-loathing and general loathing at the world (along with plenty of lusting).
