This was a favorite of my grandfather's (who traveled throughout many of the countries included in the book following WWII), and so I read it about twenty years ago. Revisiting it recently for a bookclub (and then watching the film version), I found it again somewhat lacking as a yarn. This one's been floating around in my mental to-read list for some time - spy novels are one of my favorites, and Ambler's one of the progenitors of the form. It's a bit rough around the edges compared to what the genre becomes in later years and Nancy Reagan would certainly approve the strongly worded anti-drug messaging, but at heart the story captures the timeless allure of watching a neophyte untangle the web of a shadow world.
