I've seen some episodes of the TV show and it's different from the book. Both got the atmosphere right, I could almost feel the cold and different conditions of the rich and poor classes. The book had a touch of a Bosch novel which I liked - gritty atmosphere, intrepid detective with secret desires. I didn't like how the murder was resolved though, the motive wasn't clear, there were no clues that pointed to the real killers, it felt like the ending was done just to have a twist.

This is the first in Jennings' Victorian era series starring Detective Murdoch and set in Toronto. The author does a good job of recreating the time period though I have one complaint. Horses don't pant when they get tired, they show their tiredness in other ways.
