There's a strong bond between dogs and their favored humans, a bond that is hard to break. Old Yeller was an especially helpful dog as 14 year old Travis eventually realized. At first he didn't want the big yellow dog hanging around the farm, but that changed as the two worked together to maintain the farm while Travis' father was away on a cattle drive.

Do they get any sadder than this story? It's the story of a family, trying to survive in the wilds of 1870 Texas while the head-of-the-household is off herding cattle, who takes up with an old ugly mutt. The older son, Travis, is trying to protect his mother and little brother from wild bulls and boar coons and bears and sickness and hunger. I read this book back in grade school and absolutely loved it!!! It's a real tearjerker but worth it!! I recommend it to anyone interested in good books!!!
