I neglected to write a review at the time of reading. Effective continuation of the first book, with tough detective Gunther negotiating the difficult waters of Nazi Germany. This time, almost unbelievably, he finds himself back on the police force. What follows is a crazy, pulpish story involving Nazi occult stuff, quack science, porn, drugs, and, sadly, the revealed fate of a great character from volume one. Bernie Gunther returns to Berlin in 1938, in a another noir thriller -- this one involving a serial killer specializing in young German girls. The police are baffled and Gunther is "persuaded" to rejoin temporarily to lead the investigation as some elements of the Nazi party attempt to use the killings to stir up anti-Jewish rioting. Two strikes and Bernie Gunther's out for me. Over-the-top gumshoe dialogue combined with reprehensible social attitudes that struck me not so much as representative of the times, but as exploitation. I wanted to like these because of the setting, but this was gross. ...more
