Every month my favourite group on Goodreads matches people up for buddy reads. This just so happened to be the that my buddy read partner and I picked.

I was really, really, really hesitant to read this book because I had a previous bad experience with the novel. About a year ago it was chosen in that group to be one of our "Books of the Month" (group reads) and I was so happy to read it then. Unfortunately I couldn't make it past page 10. I just hated it. I was randomly looking, as you do, for something to read over a long weekend and this series appeared on one of those prompt things, so on a whim I added it to my kindle. And really enjoyed it. The heroine of this series is hilarious while being extremely tough and brave to the point of stupidity sometimes, while managing to come out on top albeit cut to ribbons in the process. Reminiscent of Stephanie Plum, except with magic and a lot less bumbling.

Not my kind of book. Too many inconsistencies with the real word which took pages to explain and were not on my list of things I need to know.

The book has mystery overtones, so of course it caught my attention. And it did not have any romance thrown in, so that was refreshing as well. Interesting idea, good plot, engaging dialogue, what more can you a ...more

Kate Daniels is a mercenary living near Atlanta in a world where magic comes in waves and it has destroyed many buildings. Kate's guardian is murdered and she is hired by the Order to help find his killer. This leads her into the realm of both vampires and shapeshifters. I liked Kate, though she is one of many literary tough, wise mouth heroines. It took me awhile to figure out what was going on and for the story to get moving. I'd like to find out what Kate's story is and what she is so I'll li ...more
