I realize this wasn't 'sciency', and a little more of a social commentary, but I can say that this book helped to singularly make me less nervous about children taking over my identity. I haven't read many parenting books, but I can say that I found this book fascinating and empowering.

Very interesting look at parenting techniques in France from an American's point of view. Personal, funny, self-deprecating. Enlightening and thought-provoking, though most of her useful observations come too late for me...
