[close] While 1984 by George Orwell is read in English classrooms across the country, I do not feel it is fit for our 10A curriculum. The characters and events that transpire throughout the novel are difficult to relate to as a high school student. We do not live in a country where a totalitarian regime rules over the people and we do not worry about constantly being watched (though maybe we should). 1984 is a novel better suited by Honors and AP level courses where its merit and themes can be better enjoyed and discussed.

While I really thought that this book was interesting in presenting the ideas of how a totalitarian government may be in our future, the language and ideas presented are difficult to follow. The main character is hard to relate to and the problems Winston faces are drastically different to the ones I face each and every day. Although this classic is known for its forward thinking and dystopian setting, I do not believe it should be included in the English 10A curriculum.
