Honestly, I felt like this book was a big f-you to anyone who ever wanted to go to Hogwarts or dreamt of finding a secret cupboard to Narnia.
Quentin was an unlikeable main character who is constantly bored and unsatisfied with his life, no matter how miraculous it becomes. He even stops and says at times how he should be happy, but he just isn't. Someone should have given him a Prozac and the story would be much better. Probably.

It was...deeply reminiscent. I knew absolutely NOTHING about the book, and read it solely on the recommendation of my hairdresser, who didn't want to be alone reading it.
I spent much of the book thinking "...THE HELL?! It's like Harry Potter and Narnia met up with some idiot hipster."
And it was.
And I LIKED it.
The writing is good; I think a caveat that "You will not like me" a la The Libertine might be in order.
But otherwise? Can't wait to read the sequel. ...more

On second read through, I found the worldview to be dreary and depressing. I wanted to finish because the premise is interesting, but Q is a throughly unlikable character.
It's like Harry Potter crosses into Narnia with exceptions. You wont find sex, drugs and alcoholism in the world of HP. Debauchery and apathy are afoot.
