I am glad I listened to this on audio, I don't think I could have finished it otherwise. I feel like the story has become too large, cumbersome and watered-down. There are too many tentacles to keep track of on this beast, and they all begin to look much alike.
My main disappointment was that I care so little for the characters. I used to love them all and hope to see them thrive, now I have come to expect everyone to die, and because of that much of the excitement and anticipation has been bled ...more

While I still enjoyed this book immensely I felt that it took the series on an odd kind of detour. Mostly I missed many of the familiar characters from the previous novels though this was explained by Martin in that he wrote so much for the fourth installment he decided to split this book in two. After reading A Feast for Crows (which was not nearly as gripping as the previous three) I personally don't think this was a wise decision but I shall see. As much as I liked this book, it is still the weakest so far. And maybe it's because I've been more or less reading nothing but the Song of Ice and Fire for the last year or so, George R. R. Martin's "fantasy voice" is finally starting to grate on me a bit.
