I had a hard time getting back into this. I read the first 3 about 6 months ago, and it's tough to keep up with all of the characters after taking such a long time off. It gets to a point where I stopped caring which specific Ser was being screwed over by a major player at any given time. I just assume they are all dead or hiding in their castles by now. It's mostly just the big guns left. Also, he is still introducing major players! The church and the citadel just suddenly get all involved and ...more

For the most part, I really enjoyed this book a lot. I think Martin does a great job with making all the different character both interesting and unique, and I'm very interested to see what's going to happen next. However, I did feel like the book dragged a little in places, causing me to wonder every once in a while if anything had really happened in the previous chapter. Regardless, I don't feel at all disappointed by this addition to the series. ...more

The stories continue...sort of. At the end of the book, Martin notes that the story had become so complex that he had to divide it in half and publish it in two books. He declares his intent to publish the other half in a year. This was in 2005. Dance with Dragons will be out Sept 30 2008!! ARGH!

In the meantime, may I just say that some folks are getting their just desserts, the truth will out, and karma is a bitch.

FANTASTIC! I read at the back that the next book should come out a year from the publishing of this one (2005). There isn't one yet is there. Please let this not be like Wheel of Time. I also read there are to be 7 books for this series. We have 3 more to go. Dear Mr Martin, please stay healthy. And write faster. But keep the story fantastic :) Can't wait to see Tyrion again. ...more

I am now in volume 4 of this series, the song of ice and fire. So far I am a little let down with this installment because my favorite character (Tyrion) is not in it at all. It sounds like Martin is not going to wrap up any of the cliff hangers from the last book until book 5. Hopefully this volume will not just be filler. Or I will be really angry.

re-reading in anticipation of reading A Dance With Dragons
On second reading, while I still think it was a mistake to split the characters, this one is much better than I remembered.
