This book was even harder to put down than the first. The extreme violence against women, every commoner, every character you ever like, and well...pretty much all the characters is still there, and often grating. I understand the kind of atmosphere he's trying to provoke, but it's just difficult to read about that much rape and violence, really difficult. While I'm sure the political intrigue is the main draw for most, I'm really curious about the more fantastic threats from the north and east. ...more

I am having the hardest time finishing this book. I adored the first book but this one is just so hard to finish. I think it might be in my head even though this is the second time I have put it down.

A continuation of the Song of Ice and Fire series. This book is somewhat on the depressing side, but the plot continues, and Martin continues to lure you in with his characters. Again, he goes with multiple point of views to share the epic scale of his tale. You read about one character and as soon as he gets you hooked on that part of his tale, the chapter ends, and you have to wait 50 to 100 pages to hear about that character. Mostly the tale concentrates on the struggle of power between the S ...more

What can I say about this book....This is one of the only books I have read that actually was beginning to make me angry that nothing was going as I wanted it to. Every time something started to go good it turned and went bad and everytime I thought I was ok with how it went bad it was like Martin threw you a morsal of goodness and gave you hope then crushed it again. It was a good book and as soon as I finished it I picked up the next one.

Darker than the first of this series, this book had me ready to throw it at the wall at one point, and wondering, "Where the hell is Martin going with this?" Some characters died, we met some knew characters, MORE characters died (it is a war, afer all) and some things will obviously not be resolved until the next book, or the book after, or...

In this book comes the first mention of an actual "song of fire and ice" for which the series is named, so I assume it figures more prominently in books t

Great book. It was very well written. The characters and movement continue at a fast pace. The plot continues to thicken (if that seems possible). Tyrion continues to be my favorite character. I just hate the lack of closure at the end of the book.

Very Non-linear story telling. Got a bit tedious with all the battle scenes, but still very good. Thank goodness for the appendix to help keep track of all the houses and characters!
