I liked this book very much. I've settled on four stars because it's simply too long. Normally I love a huge book but this one would have been better at 2/3 the length; that would have left me wanting more instead of being relieved that it was over.

This kind of whimsical, fantastical story is not what I usually enjoy, but the writing itself is charming. In the first volume especially I was enchanted with every page.

I enjoyed the bits with Wellington particularly, since I'm a fan of Bernard Cornw

A massive tome, this novel, an alternate history of sorts, is set in England during the first two decades of the 1800's. Mr. Norrell, after years of study, becomes one of the first practical magicians of the current age, and is soon approached by powerful men to put his magic to good use. LOVED. IT. I liked, first of all, how charming it was--I normally don't appreciate a lot of footnotes, but these were so interesting and fun, and whimsical that I didn't mind the interruption. I liked, also, the length--which may seem like a weird thing to say, but I like existing in the world created and with the characters for a while (which is why I like series). 200-300 page novel doesn't give me enough of a sense of time passing and place and intimacy with the characters. I found this book just barely interesting enough to finish. Then I wondered why I bothered.
