As I mentioned regarding the Hunger Games, I tend to judge books I know to be successful more harshly. It's a fault.
Anyway, Catching Fire took a bit of time to get into and Katniss, well, she's still a bit slow (which is okay, because half the time she's just a vehicle for readerly experience).
The parts of the story I find most compelling remain the games themselves and the moment of interaction between human being and technologized nature they represent. That's where Collins is at her best, tha ...more

Catching Fire
I liked this one better than Hunger Games, even thoughBella’s Katniss’ love triangle problems tended to get on my nerves. A lot.
There’s a lot of potential for the development of solidarity through the development of alliances here, if contestants in the Hunger Games were able to overrule their survival instinct in sacrifice for the “greater good”. Not as good as the first one. One of the big reasons is that the time in the arena felt rushed and you don't get as much excitement out of it. Also, this book was a lot more predictable so I didn't spend as much time trying to guess what was going to happen. I had an idea of how it would end about halfway through. The reason this book was good is because the world collins' created is very engaging and, once you get through the boring part in the beginning, the pace picks back up.

Sucessful follow-up to the excellent Hunger Games, CATCHING FIRE isn't as strong as its predecessor, largely because the world and Katniss' situation are no longer new to us or come as a shock, but also because she spends a lot of time building up to the second hunger games and not enough time actually in them. That being said, the story and characters are still engrossing and you can't not enjoy going along for the ride. Will be reading the third and final book in the trilogy, MOCKINGJAY, asap.
