A little me for me at the start, couldn't get into to it but then bam it took ahold.
From birth until you are 16 years of age you look the way you are meant to, ugly as they call it. Then sweet sixteen roles around and you are taken away and made "pretty", in otherwords you are made to be like everyone else. Not only are you physically beautiful but mentally your mind is changed, you've "grown-up".

Uglies are people under the age of 16 in a future dystopia posing as utopia. When they turn 16, they become Pretties - plastic surgeons modify them to look like the ideal of beauty (large eyes to convey vulnerability, tons of liposuction...). Not bad but I was left unconvinced by the romance plot line...seemed to happen without explanation or development. Some of the early "trick" scenes bugged me because it seemed like they were there because someone thought teenagers would like reading about skateboarding in the air rather than how it developed the story. Later I thought, oh, okay, so that's why that was there...but it annoyed me at the time.
