I agree with Amy: I don't think this book did what it intended to do. Elphaba didn't really go in a believable direction for me. Her early life didn't make sense if you took her later actions into account. The author was obviously trying to make her character fit into a mold while still making her likable with angst and depth. It was a valiant effort and an awesome idea but it didn't flow for me. It was like the author had a few very specific images or ideas that Elphaba was supposed to go throu

I loved The Wizard of Oz as a kid, so the premise of Wicked - The Wicked Witch of the West's life story - was too good to pass up. I wasn't expecting so much political intrigue, but it was kind of fun, and I loved that she was a vegetarian and a progressive. The exporation of what constitutes evil was also intriguing. One friend highly recomended this book and another hated it. So reading it myself I wasn't sure what to think of it. I loved the play so much, the book was a bit of a disapointment. I had a very hard time with the way she treated her son with such indifference. I didn't hate it, but it wasn't one of the best books I have ever read. It was disturbing and made me think. I think I would of liked it better if I was more in the mood to be disturbed.

Not sure why I have a rating on this since I have never read it. Weird.
O.K. It was just o.k. I think having seen the musical first kind of put me off the book a bit. And it was a tough book to get through - lot more intense and dark than the musical for sure. I guess I just wanted the written version of the musical. Oh well. Still a good book - better than the last book of his that I read for sure.

Fun to read the "other" side of the story. I liked wicked over McQuire's other book, son of a witch. It was okay, but not as much fun to read as Wicked.

I have heard this is such a good book. I'm dying to see the musical, but it is quite costly.
