It's rare that I give up on a book, but I did this one about 15 chapters in. Too much detail and not enough character building.
I didn't care about any of the characters and all the details about GPS, cyber-hacking and applications to "new art". I presume the character plots of the junkie, the hardnose g-man, the musician-turned-journalist and the cyber-artist were all going to converge at some point. I just didn't care enough to stick around to find out how & when. ...more

I liked the way Spook Country is written, many small chapters of just a few pages each. The most interesting character is Tito, the Cuban emigrant and his shadow-like family. Gibson writes about orixás, and other elements of Cuban culture/history, which are all quite different from Japan. Spook Country seems to me like a "pre-cyberpunk" novel: all the elements are already there, yet unclear and diffuse.

A mediocre book, especially by Gibson's standards, than really falls apart with a very weak ending. The background to the story is never fully developed and leaves the reader wondering if anything has actually been accomplished during the book. Stick to Neuromancer and Gibson's other sci-fi.
