What Members Thought

Awesome. That is what this book was to me. Written in the 1950s during the early stages of the genre known as Science Fiction, The Stars My Destination was fast, furious and from another time of human cognition. Though not the most seamless story, I say take it for what it is: a timeless work that set minds to the stars.

sometimes it's hard to find an old sci-fi that ages well. most of them are just too hokey or dated for their own good and read like a B sci-fi film from the 50s. but this is one of the exceptions. if you read this and not look at the publication date, you'd be fooled into thinking that this was written in the last couple of years (for the most part).

I loved the storytelling--it's cinematic and paced like an action movie. I loved the distinct world he created and the imaginings of the future. I was willing to somewhat ignore his use of words like "Oriental" and "Negro" because that's what you are trained to do: forgive white guys in the 1950s thier racism. But ultimately that plus the misogyny made this book unlovable for me.
