I'd like to start with; I found this book through goodreads in a discussion. People were raving about the book, so I decided to check it out.

I think this is the best fantasy book that I've ever read. It would take me an hours to go describe how much I liked this book. The books was fast paced, filled with politics, mystery, sex and violence. The author writes each chapter from the point of view of a particular character. I don't have time to say what I want to say about this series, but I LOVE it. The author doesn't tell the story from the point of view of a single protagisit, rather, each chapter is from the point of view of a different character. It's well written but too long and then to think that there are five or six more of these tomes in this series is just too much for me. I'm not one of those patient and loyal readers that Amazon.com mentions. A Game of Thrones would be a much stronger book if the story were told from half the points of view. Basically the author could have done away from the chapters from the women's point of view as they are the least interesting and least believable of all the chapters. That would probably cut ...more

A wonderful form of escapism (of sorts) from the military. George R R Martin introduces us to a very realistic brand of fantasy - full of violence, political intrigue, infighting between powerful men carried along by the tide of fortune. This is a far cry from elves and fairies. To my mind, it is the start of a fantastic new series.
