I can’t remember who narrates this right now, but she did a great job. This book is the first of many set in the Tortall universe, and Pierce does a good job of getting you familiar to the land and laws without chapters and chapters of setup. Alanna doesn’t want to be sent off to the convent to become a proper lady, so she trades places with her twin brother: she to train at the palace to become a knight, and he to go to the convent to study magic and become a sorcerer. “Alan” is easily the smal

I love YA novels, and I love Tamora Pierce, but this one was just a little too young for me to love. That's not a reflection on the book. It's worth reading it to see how much better a writer Pierce is now, and just how much her craft has improved and matured in the years since she wrote this. Because this series takes place in the same world as her Beka Cooper series, I will definitely read the rest of the Alanna books.

A very nice young adult fantasy book. I haven't read many, at least not in the last 20+ years, so I can't judge it very well on those merits, but it was an interesting world, and it will be fun to see where else it goes.
